...for one of the most entertaining otome game adaption ever? |
So why Diabolik Lovers? Why some 15 minute Otome game adaption? Why is this particular one so entertaining?
Diabolik Lovers is basically:
"What if we make an Otome game......"
"....give the show the same, personality-less MC everyone knows and loves....."
"...give every guy a bit of the 'cool, possessive' personality that seems to be pretty popular nowadays..."
"...chuck in some vampires...."
"...and make a game demonstrating why every single one of these are complete bullshit."
Did you know? Instead of each character's ends having normal names like 'Normal', 'Good', and 'Bad' each route's end in this game is instead called 'Dark', 'Maniac', and 'Ecstasy'? |
Thus, Rejet released Diabolik Lovers ~Haunted dark bridal~, on the 11th of October 2012.
I've known a bit of Diabolik Lovers before it became an anime, though until recently I've been religiously trying to avoid spoilers. I mean, who doesn't want to play one of the most hilariously dark Otoge of all time?
I was actually a bit skeptical of the anime at first, it being 15 minutes long meant that this was clearly an anime for the fans so I was afraid of not being able to follow-through. I still found it enjoyable nonetheless.
I think the charm of Diabolik Lovers is similar to UtaPri:
in which it doesn't take itself all that seriously as an Otome adaption, and almost acknowledges its own ridiculousness. It's entertaining because it's over the top.
When you think about it though, isn't this series basically a cautionary tale to young women everywhere about what would really happen if you got a blood hungry monster for a boyfriend?
Maybe I'm thinking too deeply into this... |
My biggest hope for this series is that it keeps being 'silly', and maybe does its own thing rather than following through on a specific route or trying to adapt the whole game (which they will NEVER fit in properly).
Am I over hyping this? Probably. But it's a breath of fresh air in the world of otome game anime adaptions.
